About the Programme

Detect.
Develop.
Deliver.

Javelin throw demands a rare blend of speed, strength, coordination, flexibility and explosive power — yet Sri Lanka has never had a province-wide pathway built specifically for it. Javelin Fiesta changes that.

We combine physical literacy testing with full event-specific throwing assessment, giving every athlete — whether a proven thrower or a raw athletic talent — a fair, transparent route into the Provincial Development Squad.

Vision

Establish Central Province as a leading centre for javelin development, building future national and international champions.

Mission

Identify, assess and develop talented athletes through evidence-based detection and long-term development principles.

Hon. Sunil Kumara Gamage

Minister of Youth Affairs & Sports

Javelin Fiesta 2026 reflects our Ministry's commitment to giving every young athlete in Sri Lanka a fair, transparent path to the top. By starting in Central Province and building toward a truly national programme, we are laying the foundation for the champions who will carry our flag on the world stage.

Hon. Sugath Thilakaratne

Deputy Minister of Sports

This programme is about opportunity — reaching schools and communities that have never had a structured pathway into javelin throw. I'm proud to support a model built on science, fairness and long-term athlete welfare, and I look forward to seeing it grow province by province.

Rumesh Tharanga

National Record Holder · Sri Lanka Air Force

"I know what it means to be a kid with a javelin and no clear path forward — I started this sport late, and every step forward came from someone giving me a chance to be seen. Javelin Fiesta is exactly that kind of chance, built for hundreds of young athletes across Sri Lanka. I'm proud to back a programme that could find the next thrower who goes even further than I have."

92.62mNational Record
#2World Ranking
7th2025 World Champs Final
Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage is Sri Lanka's most decorated javelin thrower and the first Sri Lankan man to break the 90-metre barrier, a mark held by only a handful of athletes worldwide. Born in Kalutara in 2003 and educated at St. Peter's College, Colombo, he came to javelin through an unlikely route — as a teenager he was one of the country's fastest young pace bowlers, clocking 134 km/h at a national U18 talent hunt, before switching to throwing events under his father's guidance and taking up the javelin in 2017.

His rise has been rapid and record-breaking. He placed 7th in the final of the 2022 World U20 Championships, won the Asian Throwing Championships, and in 2025 became the first Sri Lankan male javelin thrower to reach a World Athletics Championships final, finishing 7th. He now trains under coaches Mike and Kelsey Barber at the Queensland Institute of Sport in Australia, and serves with the Sri Lanka Air Force. In 2026 he broke the national record with a throw of 92.62m at the Rome Diamond League — the second-best mark by any Asian thrower in history — and is currently ranked #2 in the world in the men's javelin throw.

As Javelin Fiesta 2026's official Brand Ambassador, Rumesh represents exactly the kind of pathway the programme is built to create: a talented young athlete, discovered and developed through structure, science and opportunity, going on to compete with the best in the world.
